What We Do
After the Holocaust, world leaders famously pledged, “Never again.” Yet, decades later, genocide and mass atrocities continue.
What Article 1 does:
- We give support and advice to Darfuri asylum seekers in the UK, helping them navigate the complexities of the immigration system
- We produce a range of high-level and in-depth reports and briefings on the crisis in Sudan, Chad and the Central African Republic and on the work of the International Criminal Court.
- We provide detailed and tailored policy briefings to MPs, Lords, MEPs, journalists, opinion leaders, policy makers and the general public. We help politicians and celebrities with speeches and articles about Sudan, providing facts and analysis.
- Our fact finding-missions collect information and assess the humanitarian, human rights and political situation in Darfur and neighbouring countries.
- We collect testimonies from Sudanese in Sudan, Chad and the UK and ensure that their voices are heard as part of efforts to raise awareness and resolve the crises in Sudan and Chad.
- We provide testimony and other evidence from Darfur survivors for use by the International Criminal Court, UK Parliamentary Groups, and UN investigative teams reporting on human rights abuses in Chad and Sudan.
- We mobilise young people around Britain and the world to connect to the children in Darfur, sending messages of solidarity and hope to the refugee camps in the form of drawings and poems.
- We give talks at schools, universities, faith groups and civic society groups.
- We organise high profile events to publicise the ongoing crisis in Sudan and Chad.
- Article 1 members broadcast regularly and contribute to opinion pieces in the press (BBC, Radio 4, Al Jazeera, CNN, ABC, Reuters, RFI, Radio Austria, El Pais, Der Spiegel, etc)
At short notice, Article 1 experts can provide detailed and up to date briefings and analysis on current crises and provide advice on articles, Parliamentary Questions, debates and other discussions.
In the words of a former UN rapporteur for genocide, Juan Mendez, spoken to a member of our Article 1 team, “You must be like a grain of sand in the eye of the decision-makers. Remind them constantly of their international legal obligations. Never let them forget that they have an obligation to act when massive human rights abuses and genocide take place.”
